Workshop: Water Bankruptcy: We Know Enough to Act!

Join us May 21 to learn from Brian Richter and Enrique Prunes, lead and co-authors of a landmark study documenting that more than half of all water consumed from the Rio Grande–Rio Bravo and its basin aquifers cannot be sustained. Their research makes it plain: our water accounts are overdrawn.

Settlement requirements imposed on dry hydrology and severe aquifer depletion have already placed the Lower Rio Grande in water bankruptcy — with profound consequences that will inexorably unfold. Will our inaction deliver the Middle Rio Grande to the same fate — at the complete discretion of the U.S. Supreme Court — or will we build the political will to act on our own terms?

We’ve known this for years. What’s been missing is leadership willing to act. This new research sharpens the urgency as we push to build the political will — and accept the sacrifices required — to face increasing water scarcity and adapt to it. Real progress toward lasting water security becomes possible when those with the power to act choose to use it.

Come ready to talk about what New Mexico can do — and what it will take to do it.
